It was definitely a twist of a cliché to take a character who identifies as gay, and show them realizing they actually are bi. It wasn’t absurdly special, but it was fairly crisp with some great descriptions thrown about.Īgain, I thought it was really creative and fairly realistic how Miles bisexuality was discussed. This was written in such a way that if Miles hadn’t actually been time traveling, but it had been a manifestation of DID, I would have believed it and it would have been just as interesting. The plot was definitely the books strongest point, and I enjoyed seeing how it all unfolded. I think this was overall very creative, and it remained so throughout. This is hands down one of the best books I’ve read this year, and I’m definitely adding it to my “read again” pile so I can spot all the clues knowing the outcome.įor an exciting thriller, a fantastic main character, and superior writing, this gets stars. His orientation isn’t something taken lightly, and the circumstances of his various relationships are not thrown in to “prove” he’s really bi-they are an integral part of the plot. The way the author seamlessly blends these two aspects of Miles and other characters fascinates me and makes me wonder how it would function in combination with other neurodiversity.Īnd one final point, Miles is a terrific bisexual character. He’s also not an example of the heroic/superhero patient, merely someone with an interesting story. This could have been a “time travel explains mental illness” story, but instead, Miles’ ability to time-jump dovetails with his actual mental illness.

One important note, which is a mild spoiler but I think is important and won’t ruin the story, is that I appreciated the author’s treatment of mental illness. I felt as though every chapter held a surprise which kept me on the edge of my seat. There are the usual suspects, bad guys you see coming and ones you don’t. Instead, it’s smooth, and every piece fits together to reveal the final picture. Because of things I won’t spoil, this could easily have become a confused mass of plot twists and muddled timelines. I couldn’t put it down-in fact, I was so absorbed, I finished it in one sitting, staying up far too late because I absolutely had to know what was going to happen. It’s suspenseful and exciting, but there’s a hint of a love story underneath. I’m always on the lookout for books outside the usual, and this one fits in every sense. From beginning to end, this story is a wild ride, and it’s worth every second. Where to begin? There is a lot to love about this book, but hardly anything I can say without giving away the surprises.
